For our annual fall trip for Jenny's birthday this year we went down to Etlan, Virginia at the foot of Old Rag Mountain to our dear friend Michael Rider's family home lovingly named Chinquapin.
The trip down included a stop at Sky Meadows State Park where we made a tin punched ornament that was given to "Mr. Michael" by James as a gift upon our arrival.
On our second day we made a trip over the mountain to Luray Caverns which was a treat topped off with ice cream and a trip through the most elaborate hedge maze that I've ever encountered. Interesting thing happened on the way back down the mountain. Got stuck behind an accident investigation. Three hours to reflect on the existential issues of life (and to entertain James) put an unexpected twist on the day.
On our way back day three we traveled up Skyline Drive and took our first real hike up a mountain where James could do it all by himself. Little Stoney Man was an appropriately named trail.

Ahh...I see that James Allen has inherited his Oma's intrepid climbing abilities! The getting down is always the challenge, isn't it Jamesy!
